He served in an unpaid, elected role as a trustee of the Harris County Department of Education, later becoming Vice President and President of the board. During his tenure, he championed initiatives such as the creation of Texas's first public recovery high school, a literacy advancement campaign, and a reimbursement program for teachers who purchase classroom supplies. Under his leadership, the board consistently lowered the tax rate and expanded services for special needs education.
