Remembering the Legacy of Hon. Jack M. Rains: The Man Who Inspired My Legal Journey
As I sit down to write this blog, I can't help but reflect on the incredible
journey that brought me to where I am today. It's a journey that was
profoundly influenced by one man, Hon. Jack M. Rains, whose recent passing
has left a void not only in my life but in the hearts of countless others
who had the privilege of knowing him. In this tribute, I'd like to
share my personal connection with Jack Rains, the man who inspired me
to become a lawyer.
A Chance Encounter That Changed My Life
My story begins in 2001 when I was working as a pizza delivery driver in
Houston, Texas. At that time, I had dreams, but they felt distant and
unattainable. I was also actively involved in campaigning for Orlando
Sanchez's mayoral bid, which was a unique experience in itself.
One day, while delivering a pizza to an event, I had the chance to meet
Jack Rains. Little did I know that this chance encounter would alter the
course of my life in the most profound way. Jack was a towering figure,
both literally and figuratively, with a warm smile that instantly put
me at ease.
From Humble Beginnings to Unwavering Commitment
Jack's life story was one of incredible resilience and determination.
Growing up in the deep Piney Woods of East Texas without running water
or electricity, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance from
a young age. His journey took him to Texas A&M University, where he
graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration, and later to the
University of Houston College of Law, where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence.
What struck me most about Jack was his unwavering commitment to public
service. He served as the 95th Secretary of State of Texas, a role that
allowed him to impact countless lives. But his dedication went beyond
politics. Jack was involved in numerous civic organizations, including
the Houston Chamber of Commerce, the Houston Economic Development Council,
and the Houston World Trade Organization, among many others.
A Mentor and a Gentleman
Jack Rains wasn't just a successful lawyer and politician; he was also
a mentor and a gentleman. He had a remarkable ability to connect with
people, to inspire them, and to share his wisdom generously. To those
he mentored, including me, he was like a guiding light, always ready to
offer advice and support.
I vividly remember the conversations I had with Jack during that fateful
encounter. He encouraged me to pursue my dreams of becoming a lawyer,
to believe in myself, and to work hard to achieve my goals. His words
resonated deeply with me, and I knew that I had found my calling.
Following in Jack's Footsteps
In the years that followed, I worked diligently to make Jack proud. I pursued
my legal education, eventually earning a Juris Doctorate from Thomas M.
Cooley Law School. I became a licensed attorney in the State of Texas,
specializing in bad faith insurance cases, an area of law that I'm
deeply passionate about. My journey culminated in the establishment of
the Dick Law Firm, where I continue to fight for the rights of homeowners
and business owners against insurance companies.
Jack Rains taught me that the practice of law is not just a profession
but a calling to serve others and make a positive impact on their lives.
His legacy lives on in the work I do every day, as I strive to uphold
the principles of justice and fairness that he so deeply believed in.
A Lasting Legacy
On July 5, 2023, the world lost a legendary Texan, but Jack Rains's
legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. His dedication to
public service, his commitment to mentorship, and his unwavering belief
in the power of hard work and perseverance serve as a beacon of hope for
those of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
As I pay tribute to Jack Rains, I'm reminded of the profound impact
that one person can have on the lives of others. Jack's kindness,
wisdom, and generosity continue to shape my journey as a lawyer, and for
that, I am forever grateful. His memory will always be a source of inspiration,
reminding us to strive for excellence, to serve our communities, and to
be the best versions of ourselves.
In closing, I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to Jack's
family and loved ones. He may be gone, but his spirit lives on in the
hearts and minds of all those he touched. Thank you, Jack Rains, for being
the guiding light in my life and in the lives of so many others. Your
legacy will endure, and your impact will never fade.
