Harris County Department of Education: Case for Kids

Posted By Dick Law Firm || 14-Oct-2020

Updates at HCDE:

Summary:

Collaboration Initiative seeks to provide increased support for impoverished students aged 4-12 or children with disabilities up to 19. 29 non-profits and schools with robust afterschool services received $550,000 in funding from the 2020-2021 school year collaboration initiative. Awards ranged from $10,000 to $30,000 and awardees have a 25% funding match. The 5Works Inc. program operates from a one-bedroom apartment at Catalina Apartments and serves economically disadvantaged K-5 grade families from two Alief Independent School District elementary schools. The Partnership Project is a 21-year-old initiative created by HCDE 's CASE for Kids that fills funding gaps through a creative collaboration between local, state, and federal partners. The mission is to help afterschool service providers working hard to serve youth and families in this demanding period, says Case for Kids. It's a very diverse group, with over 60 languages and dialects spoken. The concept was to add digital education to the school's online instruction system.

Case for Kids

At an apartment complex in Alief, CASE for Kids infuses a non-profit afterschool program with $10,000 in matching funds. They were supported by community members such as the Harris Department of Education Center for Afterschool, Summer, and Enrichment for Kids (CASE for Kids). Children participating in the program progress academically and gain emotional support during COVID-19.

Twenty-nine non-profits and schools with robust afterschool services received $550,000 in funding from the 2020-2021 school year collaboration initiative as awards were announced by CASE for Kids. Loans ranged from $10,000 to $30,000. Awardees have a 25% funding match.

The Partnership Project is a 21-year-old initiative created by HCDE 's CASE for Kids that fills funding gaps through a creative collaboration between local, state, and federal partners. Partnership Project provides support to children, Houston-Galveston Area Council, and Texas Workforce Commission through Event. Eligibility includes a robust 12-hour program running five days a week.

Partnership Initiative seeks to provide increased support for intensive afterschool services for impoverished students aged 4-12 or children with disabilities up to 19. The curriculum encourages social and emotional learning skills and supports academic programs supporting math and reading. The mission is to help afterschool service providers working hard to serve youth and families in this demanding period,.

Besides funding for the Collaboration Initiative, organizations like the charity 5Works benefit from staff training, access to supplies and materials, and general afterschool assistance from CASE staff for children.

The 5Works Inc. program operates from a one-bedroom apartment at Catalina Apartments and serves economically disadvantaged K-5 grade families from two Alief Independent School District elementary schools.

It's a very diverse group, with over 60 languages and dialects spoken. The Catalina Apartments currently provide in-person and virtual support and interaction options for our children and families based on academic development, healthier lifestyles, and family participation.

Since Alief ISD has been digitally running, one of the program's priorities has included educating parents and children on how to communicate with the school's online instruction system. Besides working with CASE for Youth, the afterschool program collaborates with the school district and local YMCA. The concept was to add value to apartment complexes where Alief students lived by providing a quality afterschool program that would extend the day for K-5 students.

Parents work as a necessary prerequisite for their child's eligibility in the program. Local high school students volunteer to support the complex. The program creates community, and we hope it makes the complex a little better. In addition to community-based afterschool's social-emotional advantages, Rios-Williams says Alief ISD monitors children in the program and finds they are reading at or above their grade level.

As students of Alief ISD return to school next week, 5Works shifts its attention to helping parents and students before and after the school day. Parents earn GED, ESL, and parenting lessons. They incorporate writing for the kids this semester, starting with journaling to help them convey what they're feeling with all the changes during this pandemic, and we'll do more creative writing next semester.

CASE for Kids Director explains that afterschool offers a vital role when so many families feel disconnected. Afterschool activities will give children a chance to play, share, and discover opportunities to promote peer-to-peer relationships through positive mentorship.
