HCDE Fifth Ward Head Start Care Package Distribution

Harris County Department of Education Head Start staff distributes "Be
Cause we Care" food packages to families of students served by the
Fifth Ward.
Some 400 care packages have been prepared for Harris County Education Head
Start families and will be delivered by HCDE staff. The "Because
We Care" program offers food products following safe food standards
selected by HCDE Head Start nutrition workers during COVID-19, stay-at-home order.
Head Start families gain care boxes as they move in their cars. The central
position (Walker) serves parents from five centers. More distributions
are expected in additional locations.
The HCDE Board approved the care package program during an emergency board
meeting, appropriating food support for head-start families. Food was
purchased through HCDE 's buying cooperative, Choice Partners, which
provides one million meals annually to Harris County students.

(Care packages will be provided to families participating in HCDE Head
Start services from designated centers, not the general public. Families
have already been chosen by geographic area and informed by HCDE staff
about the awards.)
This is an initiative started by HCDE's board president, Eric Dick
