What Is an Insurance Cancellation Tracker?

In a landmark transparency move, the Texas Department of Insurance launched what is effectively an insurance cancellation tracker — a free, publicly accessible tool that gives every Texan unprecedented visibility into why insurers are declining, canceling, and non-renewing policies in their own community. And today, October 15, 2026, TDI just expanded it to include auto insurance. Here is everything you need to know.

What the Cancellation Tracker Is

The Texas Department of Insurance launched a new webpage that gives Texans insight into why home insurance companies decline, cancel, or don’t renew certain policies by ZIP code. After entering a ZIP code, consumers can see the reasons insurance companies declined, canceled, or did not renew policies in their area — along with the number of active policies and the counts of nonrenewals, cancellations, and declinations reported by carriers. Through June 2026, TDI has uploaded more than 350,000 notices into the data system.

Auto Insurance Was Just Added Today

The tool just got significantly more powerful. A webpage from the Texas Department of Insurance now gives Texans insight into why personal auto insurance policies in their area were declined, canceled, or not renewed — showing the number of cars with insurance policies and the counts of nonrenewals, cancellations, and declinations reported by insurance companies. Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford stated that expanding this transparency tool is more than a data update — it is a commitment to the Texans TDI serves.

The Law Behind the Tool

The tracker did not exist by accident. This enhanced transparency stems from House Bill 2067, passed in 2025, which requires insurance companies to report this information to TDI and provide written explanations when they decline, cancel, or don’t renew a home insurance policy. Before HB 2067 took effect on January 1, 2026, Texas homeowners had no automatic right to a written explanation — and no public database existed to show which neighborhoods were being quietly abandoned by carriers.

Why It Matters for Texas Homeowners and Drivers

For years, this data had been difficult, if not impossible, for consumers to access — and the new TDI tool gives Texas homeowners a clearer picture of why insurers are declining, canceling, or refusing to renew policies in their area. The tool exposes patterns that previously required a formal complaint or legal discovery to uncover — and regulators, journalists, consumer advocates, and attorneys can now see exactly which Texas communities are being quietly dropped by carriers. TDI will update the tool at least quarterly.

How to Use the Tracker Right Now

Visit tdi.texas.gov and navigate to the cancellation and declination transparency page — enter your ZIP code to see exactly how many home and auto policies in your area were declined, canceled, or non-renewed, and the specific reasons insurers reported. Contact the TDI Help Line at 800-252-3439 if your insurer failed to provide a written explanation for any cancellation or denial after January 1, 2026.
