Why I Can No Longer in Good Conscience Advertise on Houston's Local Media

Posted: October 30, 2024 | By Eric Dick, Owner of Dick Law Firm

As many of you know, I'm Eric Dick, owner of Dick Law Firm here in Houston, and I've had the honor of serving as an elected Republican on the Harris County Department of Education Board of Trustees. As we approach this critical election, I feel compelled to address something that has been weighing heavily on my conscience.

A Difficult Business Decision

For years, Dick Law Firm has advertised on Houston's major television stations—KHOU Channel 11, KRIV Fox 26, and KPRC Channel 2. These advertising relationships have helped us reach thousands of Houstonians who needed legal representation in their fights against insurance companies. It's been a significant investment in our business and our community outreach.

However, I can no longer in good conscience continue to financially support media outlets that I believe are fundamentally misleading the very people I'm sworn to serve.

The Problem with Houston Media

As a Republican elected official and a concerned citizen, I've watched with growing alarm as our local media has abandoned any pretense of fair and balanced reporting. This is particularly evident in their coverage of national politics and conservative viewpoints.

KHOU Channel 11, in particular, has repeatedly demonstrated what I can only describe as blatant bias in their political coverage. Their reporting on President Trump and conservative candidates has been consistently slanted, often omitting crucial context or presenting opinion as fact. When media outlets lie to the public about political figures and issues, they undermine the very democracy they claim to protect.

The same pattern exists across Houston's media landscape. Whether it's KRIV's selective coverage or KPRC's editorial choices, I've seen too many examples of journalism that serves an agenda rather than the truth.

A Matter of Principle

As someone who ran for reelection in 2024 on a platform of transparency and accountability, I cannot continue to fund organizations that I believe are failing in their fundamental duty to inform the public honestly.

This decision will cost my law firm significantly. These advertising contracts represent hundreds of thousands of dollars in business investment. But some things are more important than profit.

Standing Up for Houston Families

The families I represent in insurance disputes deserve better than biased media coverage that might influence their understanding of important political and social issues. As their elected representative and their attorney, I have a duty to speak truth—even when it's costly.

I'm calling on other Houston business owners to consider whether their advertising dollars are supporting the kind of journalism our community deserves. We have the power to demand better through our economic choices.

Moving Forward

Dick Law Firm will be redirecting our advertising investment toward media outlets and platforms that demonstrate a commitment to fair, balanced reporting. We'll continue to reach our clients and community through more direct means—our website, social media, and community engagement.

To my fellow Republicans and conservatives in Houston: I encourage you to pay close attention to how local media covers the candidates and issues you care about. When you see bias, speak up. When you see dishonesty, call it out. Our democratic process depends on an informed electorate, and that requires honest journalism.

A Challenge to Local Media

To the leadership at KHOU, KRIV, KPRC, and other Houston media outlets: You have the opportunity to do better. The people of Houston deserve journalists who report facts, not activists who push agendas. I challenge you to examine your own coverage and ask whether you're serving the public interest or your own political preferences.

Until I see a genuine commitment to fair and balanced reporting, Dick Law Firm will not be contributing to your revenue streams.

This wasn't an easy decision, but it was the right one. Sometimes standing on principle requires sacrifice. I'm prepared to make that sacrifice for the sake of honest journalism and our community's right to unbiased information.
