State Farm Caught Scamming People

Emails sent by an engineering company officials evaluating Hurricane Katrina claims show the State Farm Insurance Co. needed engineers to blame the flood damage so it could make minimum payments with policyholders.

The emails received by the news organizations suggest that State Farm threatened to terminate engineers that it recently hired less than two months after Katrina reached Aug. 29, 2005.

Attorneys for homeowners suing State Farm argue the emails support their case that the insurer forced its engineers to change their reports on storm-damaged homes to refute policyholders' claims.

State Farm denies the company forced engineers to change their findings.

State Farm and other insurers say their homeowner policies cover wind damage, but not rising water, like a wind-driven surge.

Emails between the upper management of State Farm detail concerns about the State Farm scamming people.

In an email dated Oct. 17, 2005, the engineering firm will continue to work with State Farm, but mentions the need to redo a report's wording to serve the conclusions better.

It also says State Farm didn't want local engineers to inspect properties because they were emotionally involved and "working very hard to find justifications to call it to wind damage when the facts only indicate water-induced wear. State Farm was also apparently upset that it had to pay legitimate claims. Also, a State Farm commissioned a study focused on eyewitness reports, the email stated.

Some engineers commissioned by State Farm are challenging the insurer's motives in a reply dated Oct. 18, 2005, and asked whether there was an ethical issue with State Farm asking the company what to put in reports. The engineer also suggested that on another occasion, State Farm asked the company to delete details from a story because State Farm would have to compromise.

I doubt the ethics of anyone who wants to fire us simply because our findings do not fit theirs explained an engineer.

But what about the apparent fact that State Farm would love to see any report come through as water damage to allow minimum settlements.

These emails are the first paper proof we can see engineers voicing concern about being forced to alter reports.

Someone deserves a gold star on his forehead to be one of the most ethical people.

Emails were turned over as part of one of the plaintiffs' pre-trial discovery process. Emails confirm what the general public has always known.

These emails are not surprising. They explain State Farm's whole scheme.

State Farm tries to explain that consumers are taking emails out of context. State Farm only thought the engineers weren't doing a technically effective job, but she didn't push them to alter findings to refute allegations.

State Farm legally can not let the general public know that it forced engineers to adjust their storm damage findings to refute claims.

State Farm has to say its staff is committed to behaving ethically and correctly, while claims to the contrary may easily be right.
