Are insurance adjusters unhappy with their job?
Probably yes. One of the most critical obstacles to hiring and inspiring
insurance talent is the organizational atmosphere most workers encounter.
Despite low unemployment, work security, and fair pay, FastCompany reported
in 2015 that only 22 percent of financial services and insurance companies
workers were happy in their jobs. Work discontent's three key drivers
were described based on survey responses: colleague dissatisfaction, manager
dissatisfaction, and low employee appreciation and acknowledgment.
Workers' top complaints about their colleagues had bad attitudes, not
motivated or assuming responsibility, and not eligible for their position.
Fifty-three percent of respondents indicated indifference or disappointment
with their boss. The three factors most cited were inadequate communication,
inability to assign resources to their staff and departments, not providing
their growth time.
Lack of appreciation
Research has shown that the number one driver of satisfaction at work is
colleagues' appreciation. However, an overwhelming number of workers
surveyed in the finance and insurance sector (80%) said they were poorly
valued at work. Worse, respondents suggested that only what they did wrong
or chances to do better were assessed. The Quick Company quoted this quote
from Trey Taylor, CEO of Taylor Insurance Services: "Did you know
that for every 100 people that will join this year, only 11 of them will
still be in the job in 36 months? It's wearing people.
One bright spot: 85% of respondents reported having done an outstanding
job communicating their organizational objectives and how they could contribute
to their success. Is insurance attractive for millennials? This question's
answer is complicated. Research by the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation
and The Institutes found that insurance professions had features worth
millennials. For example, 61% of millennials surveyed said they want a
career that involves evaluating risks and suggesting solutions.
Working with people to solve problems appealed to more than 8 in 10 millennials,
and often chose occupations involving helping others (57%). Less than
one in ten, however, said they were very interested in insurance jobs.
Why disconnecting? The insurance industry's perceptions among younger
generations are inferior to the extent that perceptions exist.
Just 5 percent of millennials surveyed reported being very familiar with
the insurance industry, while 8 in 10 reported being untypical. The top
reasons cited for people not wanting to work in the insurance industry
were not wanting to sell insurance (52%), and the insurance industry sounds
